As a metal sculptor, my work is not unlike that of a painter. However, unlike a painter, my canvas is an unoccupied wall and in place of colorful brushstrokes, are three-dimensional creations formed primarily of steel.
Inspirations for my pieces are derived from nature, history, family and friends, as well as my own life experiences and the experiences of others around me. Although I enjoy working with organic line and geometric shapes, my work is a direct reflection of the thought or emotion I am striving to convey.
Once an inspiration emerges, I will generally begin with an embryonic sketch, which I further refine as, I develop a coherent plan of execution. The project does not begin until the marriage of the inspiration and the plan is completed. Once completed, I will configure a steel armature from which to begin my sculpting process or transfer the concept to sheet metal for further execution.
As a metal artist, I am not necessarily a metal purist. I am not averse to incorporating non-metallic materials in my work if I feel they will enhance the piece. My pieces may be crafted from new or recycled material and may also incorporate found objects. I will take advantage of various blacksmithing/metalsmithing techniques and welding technologies to attain the desired look, tactile qualities and colors required to finish each piece. If the tactile nature of my sculptures initiates a desire to touch and feel the textures, then I have accomplished at least one of my goals.
If asked for one word to define the style I wish to use in the execution of my work, I could not say that is abstract, conceptual, descriptive or any one particular style. The results I wish to attain are as individual as the particular concept or commission and as such, I will consider multiple styles and approaches to attain the desired results.
