SpyderPro ColorVision |
If you want to get prints that are very close to what you see on your monitor, you need to have an accurately calibrated
monitor. After your monitor is calibrated, you use a color profile specific to your printer/paper and the resulting print should be very close to
the image displayed by your monitor, if you view the print in the proper light. If you view it under standard tungsten light the color match
may not look very close. There are standard, inexpensive flourescet bulbs that simulate daylight that are better for print proof reading.
This product is quite easy to use. I had some initial problems not being able to get a stable baseline calibration. A call to the support line resulted in a download of an upgrade and all the problems vanished. |

| Photoshop 7 Artistry
Barry Haynes and Wendy Crumpler |
This is an excellent teaching book. My Photoshop skills jumped dramatically as I worked through the book. Concepts are explained clearly and then you are walked through examples that demonstrate exactly what to do. Highly recommended.
| Masterclass in Photography Michael & Julien Busselle |
Although this is an educational book, it is worth its price just to look at the photographs. Most pictures are in color and cover a range of topics - landscape, travel, people. The format is interesting and refreshing. For each photograph the photographer briefly discusses the goal and the problems and how he approached them. The other author then critiques the photograph. You will learn and enjoy.
| The Photography of Alfred Stieglitz. Georgia O'Keeffe's Enduring Legacy Edited by Therese Mulligan |
An interesting history and collection of photographs by Stieglitz. He was an influential photographer working in the late 1800's until his death in 1946. His career and relationship with O'Keefe is descrbed in 30 pages and there are 40 single page photographs from his collection.
| Photoshop CS | This is the gold standard program for digital photograph production. There are more tools than any one photographer will
ever use, but the ability to edit your work seems limitless. If you are really serious about printing outstanding digital photographs, this
is for you. In comparison to Photoshop 7, I use the Camera Raw plug in feature, the batch rename, and the 16 bit layer functionality. Otherwise the differences for me are relatively small. On the other hand, these features alone have made the upgrade worthwhile to me and there are many others. |
||
| Photoshop CS Upgrade | Get this upgrade if you already own a previous version of Photoshop. Note that you can not upgrade from Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Album, Photoshop Limited Edition, or PhotoDeluxe. | ||
| Photoshop Elements 3.0 | I started out in digital photography with PS Elements 2.0 and loved it. It has the core features of PS CS version but less capability to use layers and curves. However, unless you are very serious about tweaking out every last visual gram, this version will probably be fine for you. The only downside otherwise is that you don't have an upgrade path to the full Photoshop CS; you will need to shell out the full purchase price when you decide to move up. | ||
| Kodak Portra 160 NC | This is currently my favorite color negative film. It has a wide dynamic range, fine grain, excellent color. | ||
Focus on NatureJohn Shaw |
This is loaded with useful tips and techniques, not to mention great pictures. This was one of the first books I studied for taking photos of nature.
